| | Purim (Hebrew: About this sound פּוּרִים (help·info) Pûrîm "lots", from the word pur,[3] related to Akkadian pūru) is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire from destruction in the wake of a plot by Haman, a story recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther (Megillat Esther).
According to the Book of Esther, in the Hebrew Bible, Haman, royal vizier to King Ahasuerus (presumed to be Xerxes I of Persia), planned to kill all the Jews in the empire, but his plans were foiled by Mordecai and his adopted daughter Queen Esther. The day of deliverance became a day of feasting and rejoicing.
Purim is celebrated by giving mutual gifts of food and drink (mishloach manot), giving charity to the poor (mattanot la-evyonim),[4] a celebratory meal (se'udat Purim), and public recitation of the Scroll of Esther (keriat ha-megillah), additions to the prayers and the grace after meals (al hannisim).[5] Other customs include drinking wine, wearing of masks and costumes, and public celebration.[6]
Purim is celebrated annually according to the Hebrew calendar on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar (Adar II in leap years), the day following the victory of the Jews over their enemies. In cities that were protected by a surrounding wall at the time of Joshua, Purim is instead celebrated on the 15th of the month on what is known as Shushan Purim.[7] Today, only Jerusalem celebrates Purim on the 15th.
The Book of Esther begins with a six-month (180 day) drinking feast given by King Ahasuerus, for the army of Persia and Media, for the civil servants and princes in the 127 provinces of his kingdom, at the conclusion of which a seven-day drinking feast for the inhabitants of Shushan (Susa), rich and poor, with a separate drinking feast for the women organised by the Queen Vashti in the pavilion of the Royal courtyard.
At this feast Ahasuerus gets thoroughly drunk and, at the prompting of his courtiers, orders his wife Vashti to display her beauty before the nobles and people wearing her royal crown. She refuses, and Ahasuerus decides to remove her from her post. He then orders all young women to be presented to him, so he can choose a new queen to replace Vashti. One of these is Esther, who was orphaned at a young age and was being fostered by her cousin Mordecai. She finds favor in the king's eyes, and is made his new wife. Esther does not reveal that she is Jewish.
Shortly afterwards, Mordecai discovers a plot by two courtiers Bigthan and Teresh to kill Ahasuerus. They are apprehended and hanged, and Mordecai's service to the king is recorded in the daily record of the court.[12]
Ahasuerus appoints Haman as his prime minister. Mordecai, who sits at the palace gates, falls into Haman's disfavor as he refuses to bow down to him. Having found out that Mordecai is Jewish, Haman plans to kill not just Mordecai but the entire Jewish minority in the empire. Obtaining Ahasuerus' permission and funds to execute this plan, he casts lots ("purim") to choose the date on which to do this – the thirteenth of the month of Adar. When Mordecai finds out about the plans he orders widespread penitence and fasting. Esther discovers what has transpired; she requests that all Jews of Shushan fast and pray for three days together with her, and on the third day she seeks an audience with Ahasuerus, during which she invites him to a feast in the company of Haman. During the feast, she asks them to attend a further feast the next evening. Meanwhile, Haman is again offended by Mordecai's refusal to bow to him; he builds a gallows for Mordecai, with the intention to hang him there the very next day.[13]
That night, Ahasuerus suffers from insomnia, and when the court's daily records are read to him to help him fall asleep, he learns of the services rendered by Mordecai in the earlier plot against his life. Ahasuerus asks whether anything was done for Mordecai and is told that he received no recognition for saving the king's life. Just then, Haman appears, and King Ahasuerus asks him what should be done for the man that the King wishes to honor. Thinking that the King is referring to Haman himself, Haman says that the honoree should be dressed in the king's royal robes and led around on the king's royal horse. To Haman's horror, the king instructs Haman to do so to Mordecai.
Later that evening, Ahasuerus and Haman attend Esther's second banquet, at which she reveals that she is Jewish and that Haman is planning to exterminate her people, which includes her. Ahasuerus instead orders Haman hanged on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. The previous decree against the Jews could not be annulled, so the King allows Mordecai and Esther to write another decree as they wish. They write one that allows the Jews to defend themselves during attacks. As a result, on 13 Adar, five hundred attackers and Haman's ten sons are killed in Shushan. Throughout the empire 75,000 of the Jews' enemies are killed (Esther 9:16). On the 14th, another 300 are killed in Shushan. No spoils are taken.[14]
Mordecai assumes the position of second in rank to Ahasuerus, and institutes an annual commemoration of the delivery of the Jewish people from annihilation.[15]
The first century CE historian Josephus recounts the origins of Purim in Book 11 of his Antiquities of the Jews. He follows the Hebrew Book of Esther but shows awareness of some of the additional material found in the Greek version in that he too identifies Ahasuerus as Artaxerxes and provides the text of the king's letter. He also provides additional information on the dating of events relative to Ezra and Nehemiah.[16] Josephus also records the Persian persecution of Jews and mentions Jews being forced to worship at Persian erected shrines.[16][17] Berossus (early third century BCE) provides context for the account in that he records the introduction of idols of Anahita under Artaxerxes II Mnemon throughout the Persian Empire.[18] An account of the origins of Purim is also included in chapter 4 of the tenth century CE compilation of Jewish history, the Josippon. It too follows the original biblical account and includes additional traditions matching those found in the Greek version and Josephus (whom the author claims as a source) with the exception of the details of the letters found in the latter works. It also provides other contextual information relating Jewish and Persian history such as the identification of Darius the Mede as the uncle and father-in-law of Cyrus.[19]
A brief Persian account of events is provided by Islamic historian Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari in his History of the Prophets and Kings (completed 915 CE).[20] Basing his account on Jewish and Christian sources, al-Tabari provides additional details such as the original Persian form "Asturya" for "Esther".[21] He places events during the rule of Ardashir Bahman (Artaxerxes II),[22] but confuses him with Ardashir al-Tawil al-Ba (Artaxerxes I), while assuming Ahasuerus to be the name of a co-ruler.[21] Another brief Persian account is recorded by Masudi in The Meadows of Gold (completed 947 CE).[23] He refers to a Jewish woman who had married the Persian King Bahman (Artaxerxes II), and delivered her people,[22][24][25] thus corroborating this identification of Ahasuerus. He also mentions the woman's daughter, Khumay, who is not known in Jewish tradition but is well remembered in Persian folklore. Al-Tabari calls her Khumani and tells how her father (Ardashir Bahman) married her. Ferdowsi in his Shahnameh (c. 1000 CE) also tells of King Bahman marrying Khumay.[26] From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purim |

"Do you ever consider that many times you have even received warnings in your dreams... and due to lack of understanding you may have allowed some nasty events to happen to you?" The President's Case A few days before he was killed, Abraham Lincoln said that he was impressed by the number of prophetic dreams in the Bible. When his wife asked him why he'd brought this up, Lincoln related a dream he just had. He was wandering through the halls of the White House trying to find out where the sound of weeping people was coming from. His search led him to the East Room where he saw a coffin lying on a platform, guarded by soldiers and surrounded by a throng of mourners. "Who is dead?" he asked in the dream. "The president, killed by an assassin" was the answer. The loud grieving sobs of mourners finally awoke Lincoln from the dream. We all know the rest of the story... Lincoln was killed by an assassin's bullet a few days later. What dreams are you ignoring? The next few episodes may not concern you... you should thank God for that. However they may be a problem of someone close to you. Dream Keys Your dreams contain vital information... and a key! Every person who sleeps carries this key, but few know how to "plumb" their dream's depths to excavate the spiritual intelligence... that could usher in promotion, happiness, success, and wealth. And even divine protection... Our Lord Jesus says in Matthew 13:25, "But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way" You see, the greatest danger that we face in life begins when we sleep. The "tares" Jesus talked about refers to mysterious problems that seem to pop out of nowhere and turn a person's life upside down! There are 40 kinds of "tares" i.e. problems that can be introduced into a person's life while she's asleep. For instance, If you've had any of these dreams, it's time to take spiritual action: 1. do you eat or drink in the dream? 2. do you have sex in the dream? 3. do you swim in the dream? 4. are you being chased or bitten by cats, dogs, or even snakes? 5. do you get shot at in the dream? 6. do you have accidents in the dream? 7. has anything been stolen from you in the dream? 8. do you see yourself being married in the dream (or going to weddings)? 9. do you climb mountains in the dream? 10 do you dream and forget everything by the time you wake up? 11 do you have nightmares? Then please just take a few moments and go through this... it takes less than 5 minutes. ********************************** "I don't dream, or I don't remember what I dream if I do." That's a feedback I've been getting from an overwhelming number of people. But what has God to say? In Job 33:14-18, we read: "For God speaks once, yes twice, yet man perceives it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, in slumberings upon the bed, then He opens the ears of man, and seals their instructions, that He may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword." So everyone dreams. Even scientists agree. In my new ebook, "The Dream CODE" I tell this true story of a newly-wedded woman in England. She dreamed that a blonde woman she'd never seen before walked into her home, made straight for her closet and grabbed her wedding gown. She was gone before you could say, "Jesus is Lord." At breakfast the following morning, she told her husband about it. He just laughed it off. Tell you what? On that exact, same date two months later, the husband filed for divorce. He packed up and moved in with - you guessed it - the blonde woman who first appeared in the dream! Dreams in the Bible There are at least 28 accounts of dreams in the Bible. A few of them are: (i) Joseph had a dream (Gen.20) (ii) Pharaoh had a dream (iii) Solomon had a dream (iv) The wise men had a dream (v) Joseph was warned in a dream to run away with Baby Jesus (vi) Pilate's wife had a dream Sources of Dreams Your dreams can come from 3 sources: - God - Satan - The flesh When a dream is from God, it - Encourages - Assures - Comforts - Directs - Instructs - Guides - Corrects - Reveals When a dream is from the enemy, satan, it is - Absurd - Mysterious - Unreasonable - Confusing - Terrifying When it comes from your flesh, it generally mirrors what's been occupying your thoughts throughout the day, e.g. - Negative news from the media - Idle conversations Danger of NOT Dreaming If you feel you don't dream at all, the real problem is that of recall. If you cannot recall your dreams when you wake up, you face a double danger: - If God wants to speak to you, you will not hear. - The enemy's presence and activities in your life will remain largely undetected. The Result? 1. you'll be clueless about the things happening to you, your finances, health and marriage. 2. you may end up living from crisis to crisis, and wondering why your prayers are not working. More Pointers Here are more of those dreams that have serious spiritual implications: - going back to your childhood days or to your old schools - strong winds blowing against you or your kids - carrying strange baby - wearing tattered clothes - finding yourself naked - losing your certificates - sitting for exams and not able to complete it - seeing strange creatures laughing at you (even when you call the name of Jesus) - discussing with dead relatives What's this all mean? Bible says in James 1:22: "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." In the next email, we'll find out what some of these dreams really mean and what to do about them. Until then, Keep your eyes on JESUS ... the Author and Finisher of our faith!

Dear loved ones, relatives and friends,
Let me greet you all a happy and blessed Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous new 2011! Isn't it exciting, it's 'Christmas time once more'! Some of you are having white Christmas - enjoy it. We are having cool Christmas in paradise :) So many things happened this year (mishaps, accidents, nice tours, connecting with old friends and relatives; lost some friends, gained more friends; found high school and college classmates in Facebook and had eyeball with some of them - really awesome!). This coming new year, I am definitely listing some New Year Resolutions (which I have not done for decades). Change is coming....
| | OMGosh, I did not intend this to be public, but when I posted the pictures at Multiply allowing only my hubby to view, I found out later from FB greetings that the name of the album was also posted in my FB status....because in some other entries I enabled Multiply a tie-up withFB postings. I did not know that even if I had only selected one person to view this, it would still appear on my FB status. Now, that's a lesson learned, lol. Not that I'd like to keep this a secret, but I presumed that friends don't not have to be reminded, hehehe.
Since friends and loved ones have greeted me at FB already, I might as well make this entry public :)
As if to remind me that one enjoys the blue skies more if there are clouds, my hubby's ex fuc* buddy. This one (one of the three fuc* buddies before I met my hubby) pretended that she was pregnant (after Dave told her that he's endiong their trysts). When we asked her to have a pregnancy test, with us verifying the result, she told us to give her more time. Ummm, more time?... In order to get someone impregnate her, I presume, lol. Anyway, that was in 2005. I guess she saw his FB account so she sent him a message: would like to reconnect with him as an FB friend. Good boy that he is, he told me to choose 'ignore' for her friend request, and that's what I did.
'Twas a quiet and celebration - a lunch at Sit-n-Bull, but we enjoyed our little party :) |
| | We love food, we love eating....and it's nice to admire the plating arrangements :) |
